The TestDaF ("Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache") is a standardized language test developed specifically for international university applicants. The certificate is recognized by all German universities as official proof of the required German language skills, regardless of whether the application is for a bachelor's, master's, or doctoral program. All four skills – reading, listening, writing, and speaking – are tested with a focus on the language demands of academic life in Germany.

Exam types

The TestDaF is offered in two formats: paper-based and digital. Both are nearly identical in structure, content, assessment, and recognition, and consist of the four sections reading, listening, writing, and speaking. They differ only in how they are administered. In the paper-based TestDaF, the written tasks are completed on paper; the speaking section is recorded digitally on a computer. In the digital TestDaF, all sections are completed on a computer. Both formats take place under supervision at a licensed test center – participation from home is not possible.

Registration and fees

Registration takes place exclusively through the official TestDaF Institute website. Two exam schedules are available: a general one for all countries worldwide and a separate one for the People's Republic of China. After selecting the country and exam month, personal details are entered and the fee is paid. A registration confirmation is sent by email. Since exam places are limited, early registration is recommended.
For the paper-based TestDaF, the exam location and further details appear in the admission letter approximately ten days after the registration deadline closes. This letter must be printed, signed, and presented on the day of the exam along with a valid ID. For the digital TestDaF, all information is available exclusively through the candidate portal.
Exam fees are divided into three country groups. In Germany, the current fee is 215 euros for the paper-based and 210 euros for the digital TestDaF. Payment is made through the candidate portal by credit card, direct debit, PayPal, Alipay, or instant bank transfer. Current prices can be found on the TestDaF Institute website.

Score levels

A distinctive feature of the TestDaF is that results are not reported on the standard A1 to C2 scale but on three score levels of its own, each clearly mapped to the CEFR:

  • TDN 3 corresponds to approximately B2 and generally only qualifies for restricted university admission.
  • TDN 4 falls between B2 and C1 and is the standard level required for admission at most German universities.
  • TDN 5 corresponds to C1 and is required as a minimum by some master's programs.

Each of the four exam sections is assessed separately and assigned on of these three levels. No overall result is given.

Content and requirements

The total exam time is 3 hours and 15 minutes, with breaks scheduled between sections. The paper-based and digital TestDaF differ slightly in the number and format of tasks:

Paper-based TestDaF

  • Reading: 3 texts, 30 tasks, 60 minutes – texts from university life and academic topics; questions on main ideas and details.
  • Listening: 3 audio texts, 25 tasks, 40 minutes – short dialogues, interviews, or lectures; identifying overall context and key points.
  • Writing: 1 task, 60 minutes – a structured text on a given topic, including a description of a diagram and a reasoned personal position.
  • Speaking: 7 tasks, 35 minutes – responses to typical university situations, such as expressing an opinion, taking part in a discussion, or giving advice to a fellow student.

Digital TestDaF

  • Reading: 7 task types, 34 tasks, 55 minutes – academic texts; identifying main ideas, arguments, and implied meanings, as well as cross-referencing information from text and graphics.
  • Listening: 7 task types, 30 tasks, 40 minutes – conversations, interviews, or lecture excerpts; identifying main ideas, details, and implied information.
  • Writing: 2 tasks, 60 minutes – structured texts on socially relevant topics drawing on various sources; formulating personal positions and conveying the arguments of others.
  • Speaking: 7 tasks, 35 minutes – oral communication in typical university situations; justifying viewpoints, summarizing content, and incorporating information from texts and graphics.

Further detailed information on task types and requirements can be found on the TestDaF Institute website.

Preparation materials

Official materials and courses are available to help prepare for the TestDaF. The TestDaF Institute website offers original training materials, including sample tasks and tutorials for the digital TestDaF as well as model tests with guidance and tips for the paper-based format. These materials explain the task types and provide answer keys for self-checking.
In addition, TestDaF preparation courses developed in collaboration with the TestDaF Institute are available through Deutsch-Uni Online (DUO). Many g.a.s.t. test centers also offer preparation courses; available options can be inquired about directly on-site.
The TestDaF Institute also offers a short self-assessment test for a rough indication of one's current level. The test consists of two short gap-fill exercises and serves as an orientation tool but does not replace an official placement assessment or preparation.

Options if the exam is failed

The TestDaF can be retaken as many times as needed. Retaking individual sections is not possible. The entire exam must be retaken. Sufficient preparation time before a retake is advisable. If there are doubts about the result, a review can be requested within four weeks of the results being published. The fee is currently 40 euros for one section and 15 euros for each additional section – a full review of all four sections currently costs 85 euros.

Certificate after passing

Results are processed centrally by the TestDaF Institute. For the paper-based TestDaF, results are available after approximately six weeks; for the digital format, after around four weeks. The certificate is issued exclusively in digital form and can be downloaded from the personal online account. Delivery by post or email is not available.
