Practicing German: Reading and Writing
Train gradually with texts from books and online sources and through regular writing – develop vocabulary and confidence.

Reading and writing are two skills that reinforce each other in language learning: regular reading builds a feel for sentence structures and vocabulary, both of which are essential for writing. Regular writing, in turn, puts what has been read into active use and helps it stick. Both skills are well suited to independent practice and are also an important part of official German language exams. This article offers practical tips for training reading and writing in a targeted way.
Reading
Reading is particularly well suited to independent practice: it requires no direct communication and involves no time pressure. Texts can be read at one's own pace, revisited as needed, and used deliberately to practice vocabulary and grammar. Regular reading makes grammatical structures visible in context and helps new words take root.
Building up gradually
A tried-and-tested approach is to start with simple texts at lower language levels, where content and structures are easy to follow. Setting a manageable daily reading goal and sticking to it consistently is key. As confidence grows, the volume can be increased gradually. This steadily expands both reading comprehension and vocabulary.
Working out meaning from context
When reading, the instinct to reach for a dictionary straight away is worth resisting. A better approach is to try to infer the meaning of unfamiliar words from the surrounding sentence first. If that does not work, the word can be looked up and noted in a vocabulary list. Engaging actively with the text also helps: identifying the main ideas and drawing one's own conclusions. Discussing the text with a teacher or fellow learners deepens understanding further.
Using magazines and books
There is no shortage of suitable reading material. Graded readers such as those from Klett Verlag offer short to medium-length texts for levels A1 to B2, accompanied by comprehension questions for self-checking. Magazines, newspapers, and books in German are also excellent options once the language level allows. The following free online resources are also available:
- Belinguapp: An app with short stories and articles on a range of topics, matched to the learner's language level, with translations, audio versions, and quiz questions.
- Deutsch-to-go: A website with short articles for A2 to C2, each with an audio recording and questions on the text and grammar.
- ZDF Logo: Articles and stories in clear, simple language, originally created for children.
- Nachrichtenleicht: News from Germany and around the world in simplified German, well suited to lower language levels.
- Deutsche Welle: Texts specifically designed for B2 level, suitable for more advanced reading practice.
- Archive of German Stories (University of Virginia): Free stories from the late 18th to the end of the 19th century for those interested in German culture and literature.
Writing
Writing requires the conscious application of vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structures. Unlike reading, it demands that thoughts be actively organized and shaped into coherent sentences. Regular writing reinforces learned structures and builds a lasting feel for the language. The following tips can help develop writing skills in a deliberate way.
Building up writing practice gradually
Especially at the beginning, it is important not to put pressure on oneself. The length of a text or how well it is phrased matters far less than simply getting started. Short texts about everyday life or a self-chosen topic are ideal for getting into the habit. Scheduling regular writing time, e.g. a short text in the evening, helps build a consistent routine. When in doubt, texts can be checked by a teacher, a friend, or a suitable app.
Reding as a foundation for confident writing
Regular reading is an important foundation for good writing. Through reading, learners develop a solid vocabulary and a feel for the typical sentence structures and expressions of the German language. Reading texts also shows how thoughts can be expressed clearly and words connected meaningfully. As little as 30 minutes of daily reading at one's own level can make a noticeable difference to both vocabulary and writing ability.
Helpful online tools
There are many useful digital tools that support writing in German. AI-based programs such as ChatGPT, Claude AI and Gemini are widely used: they suggest topics, correct texts, and offer concrete suggestions for improvement, many of them free of charge. Specialized writing and correction tools such as DeepL Write, Duden Mentor, LanguageTool and Wortliga help identify grammar mistakes and improve writing style in a targeted way.
Practicing together in online communities
Alongside digital tools, there are also online communities where experienced German speakers voluntarily correct texts. Feedback there is not always immediate, but it tends to be particularly precise and useful. Two well-known platforms are WriteStreakGerman (reddit) and LangCorrect, where learners can post their own texts and have them corrected by others. The Community Portal of the Freiburger Bund is also a great place to practice German through everyday writing and exchange with other learners, building confidence along the way.
