Self-assessment test on the Goethe-Institut website

The Goethe-Institut offers a free placement test online. It takes around 15 to 20 minutes and covers 30 questions on listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and grammar. No registration is required. At the end, the user receives an assessment of their language skills, though without a precise official level designation. The test is intended purely for personal orientation and cannot be used as proof of language proficiency for authorities or language schools.

Interactive exercises at the Goethe-Verlag

The Goethe-Verlag (not to be confused with the Goethe-Institut) offers a wide range of short tests on its website that are particularly well suited for independent practice. The tasks usually involve selecting the correct German translation of a sentence from several given options. These conventional exercises are complemented by creative formats such as crossword puzzles, making learning more varied and engaging.

Deutsche Welle language test for levels A1 to B1

Deutsche Welle also offers a free placement test, particularly well suited for learners at the A1 to B1 level. The test consists of 30 questions covering listening comprehension, reading comprehension, and grammatical knowledge. As with the Goethe-Institut test, the result cannot be printed and is intended solely for personal self-assessment.

Online practice test for TestDaF preparation

Those preparing for the official TestDaF exam can start with a free practice test on the TestDaF Institute website. The test consists of two gap-fill texts, each with 20 missing words and a five-minute time limit per section. Results are given as a score out of 40 and provide an indication of how well-prepared one is for the real exam. This test is not officially recognized but offers useful orientation for gauging one's current level.

Sprachtest.de: a demanding test with time restriction

Another well-known online test, developed in collaboration with telc and ZEIT SPRACHEN, is available at Sprachtest.de. The test takes around 15 minutes and covers reading, listening, grammar, and vocabulary. Each question has a time limit, and previously answered questions cannot be revisited, which makes the test quite demanding. The listening text is also played only once. Results are sent by email as a PDF.

Telc tests for professional or general use

Telc offers two test formats: a general test aimed at companies wishing to assess the language level of their employees, and a job-specific test particularly suited to applicants with advanced language skills. Both formats cover all four language skills – reading, listening, writing, and speaking – and are aligned with levels A1 to C1. Results are available immediately. Both tests carry a fee: the general test currently costs 20 euros per person, and the professional test 5 euros per participant.

Short test at the BFZ center

The Bildungszentrum BFZ (BFZ Education Center) also offers a free online placement test. It is aimed primarily at learners at the A1 to B1 level and takes around 10 to 15 minutes. The focus is on reading comprehension and basic grammar. The tasks are varied and easy to follow. At the end, participants receive their result as a digital file for personal reference.
