Choosing the right textbook is an important first step in learning German. There is no single textbook that works for everyone — learning styles and support needs vary from person to person. There are, however, clear criteria that make the decision easier. Alongside printed textbooks, digital learning resources play an increasingly important role: numerous platforms support the learning process through grammar exercises, varied tasks, and audio and video materials. This article covers the most important criteria for choosing a textbook, helpful learning websites, and further creative approaches to learning.
Criteria for choosing a suitable textbook
Matching a textbook to the learning format
The choice of textbook often depends on the selected learning format. Those attending a course generally have little influence over which textbook is used – this decision is usually made by the teacher. Those who want to continue learning independently after a course should, where possible, continue using the same textbook. This eases the transition to self-directed learning, ensures continuity of content, and prevents unnecessary repetition of material that has already been covered.
Support in the native language
At the early levels such as A1 and A2 in particular it helps to choose a textbook that includes explanations or vocabulary lists in one's own language. Many course books come with a supplementary booklet containing translations or word lists that can be used alongside the main volume. This significantly aids comprehension and lowers the barrier to entry, especially for independent learners. The textbook should also match the learner's current level and follow a clear, logical progression. Many series span multiple levels, e.g. A1 to B1 or B1+ to C1, making it possible to work with the same series over an extended period.
Covering all four language skills
A good textbook develops all four language skills: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Ideally it also includes audio or video material, vocabulary lists, clear grammar explanations, and varied exercises. A complete set for one language level including supplementary materials generally costs no more than 100 to 150 euros – a worthwhile investment that supports targeted, structured learning over time.
An overview of popular textbook series
The following series are widely used in language schools across Germany:
- Menschen-Serie (Hueber Verlag): Very widely used, covers A1 to B1 across six volumes.
- Netzwerk neu-Serie (Klett-Verlag): Also popular, with a comparable structure to Menschen.
- Schritte-Serie (Hueber Verlag): Particularly well suited for beginners, also covering A1 to B1.
- Studio D-Serie (Cornelsen-Verlag): An older series, less widespread, covering A1 to B2.
- Aspekte-Serie (Klett-Verlag): For intermediate and advanced levels, B1+ to C1.
- Sicher-Serie (Hueber-Verlag): Also suitable for B1+ to C1, modern and well structured.
These textbooks are designed primarily for classroom use and generally do not include detailed explanations for self-study. Since some series are available in both newer and older editions, it is worth making sure to get the most current version.
Helpful learning websites
In addition to textbooks, a number of free online platforms offer targeted support for learning German across different areas.
- Departments of Germanic Languages and Literatures (University of Michigan) offers an extensive collection of materials: clearly structured grammar explanations, intensive exercises, vocabulary lists, and resources for practicing all four language skills.
- German.net provides exercises on reading, grammar, vocabulary, and verb conjugation – clearly laid out and immediately usable.
- Global Language Online Support System (GLOSS), developed by the U.S. Department of Defense for language training, offers 49 reading texts and 48 listening exercises in German at various levels. The tasks are challenging even at lower levels and lead to noticeable improvements in listening and reading comprehension with regular use.
- Conjuguemos teaches vocabulary and verb conjugations in a playful way. Interactive exercises and small games keep learners engaged and help reinforce what has been learned.
- LingoClip uses German music as learning material: learners listen to songs and fill in gaps in the lyrics using only what they hear, with no additional aids. It is an entertaining and varied way to train listening comprehension.
- Orthografietrainer offers interactive exercises on vocabulary, sentence structure, and spelling, sorted by difficulty, allowing learners to build skills gradually.
- Language Transfer takes a different approach: rather than conventional grammar drills, the platform uses spoken examples, everyday situations, and simple dialogues. Lessons are available free of charge as audio recordings and offer a particularly accessible way into the language.
- News in Slow German is ideal for learners who want to improve their listening comprehension while keeping up with current topics. News from Germany and around the world, as well as stories from culture and everyday life, are presented in slow, clear German, accessible at all levels.
Further creative approaches for greater motivation
Learning through video games
Those who feel stuck or are running low on motivation can try something new and entertaining. Many popular video games are available in German or can be switched to German. Reading instructions, dialogues, and in-game text naturally exposes players to new vocabulary and sentence structures, almost without noticing, just by playing.
Making use of films and series
Films and series can also be a genuinely effective tool for learning German. Numerous platforms offer curated lists of German-language or dubbed content, including material aimed at children and young people that is especially easy to follow. The platform languagereactor connects with Netflix and YouTube to automatically display German subtitles with translations while watching.
Using the community as a learning resource
Social networks and online communities can be a deliberate part of a German learning strategy. They offer not only information and entertainment but above all the chance to connect with other learners and native speakers. The Community Portal of the Freiburger Bund is particularly well suited for this: it brings together international professionals for exchange and networking, offering a space to share experiences, ask questions, and make new contacts. Those who read regularly and get involved can put German to practical use while building a helpful network at the same time.
