Germany has a well-developed and reliable healthcare system that enables medical care for all residents. Those coming to Germany and staying here for longer than six months, registering a residence, or taking up employment must take out health insurance. In Germany, there is statutory and private health insurance. For foreign healthcare professionals coming to Germany for qualification measures or language courses, for example, only private health insurance is possible initially.

Private health insurance

Private health insurance contributions depend on age, health status, and selected benefits. The basic rate covers fundamental medical services. Additional treatments, such as physiotherapy, extended dental services, or aesthetic treatments, can be insured extra as desired.

For people coming to Germany with a language course visa or a visa for recognition of foreign professional qualifications without work authorization, private health insurance is mandatory. Generally, private student insurance can be taken out, with contributions currently ranging between 25 and 80 euros per month. With permanent employment, private insurance contributions generally amount to several hundred euros monthly. Younger and healthy persons generally pay less, while older people or persons with pre-existing conditions pay higher contributions.

Statutory health insurance

When employment is taken up in Germany, switching to statutory health insurance may be possible under certain conditions. However, this is not guaranteed and depends on individual factors. Contributions amount to approximately 14β€―% of gross monthly salary, with employers and employees each covering half. Statutory health insurance covers basic medical services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, surgical procedures, medications, as well as some dental treatments.
