The Goethe-Institut is one of the best-known providers of German language exams worldwide. The exams cover all levels from A1 to C2 and are aimed at people learning German as a foreign or second language. The focus is not on testing knowledge of rules but on the ability to use German appropriately in real situations.
Exam types
The Goethe-Institut offers exams for different target groups. Children and young people between around ten and sixteen years of age can take age-appropriate exams; from sixteen onwards, all levels from A1 to C2 are available. In addition to the standard Goethe certificates, there are also specialized exams, including professional and subject-specific language certificates for medical and other qualified professionals.
Registration and fees
Registration takes place either directly at an authorized exam center or online through the website of the relevant Goethe-Institut. At the time of registration, the exam date and format are selected – a paper-based and a digital option are available. The exam itself always takes place in person at a Goethe-Institut; purely online or at-home exams are not offered.
Fees depend on the chosen language level and increase at higher levels. Current prices can be found on the Goethe-Institut website.
Exam structure
The exam is divided into four parts: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. Reading, listening, and writing make up the written section; speaking is assessed in a separate oral exam. All four parts are graded individually and carry equal weight in the overall result. Depending on the level and exam center, the parts may take place on one day or be spread across two days.
The scope and time allowances increase with the level, as does the complexity of the tasks. Detailed information on the format is available on the Goethe-Institut website or directly from the relevant exam center.
Content and requirements
The tasks are designed to assess the ability to use language effectively in realistic situations. The reading section involves working with a range of text types, from short messages to argumentative texts. The listening section focuses on understanding spoken information from everyday conversations or topic-based contexts. The writing section requires producing texts that are appropriate in content and style for the relevant level. In the speaking section, candidates present and discuss topics and respond to their interlocutor.
Requirements increase with each level: at lower levels, everyday communication situations take center stage, while higher levels demand more complex structures, a broader vocabulary, and more challenging texts.
Preparation materials
For each level, the Goethe-Institut provides free practice materials on its website, including practice tasks with answer keys, vocabulary lists, and audio files for listening comprehension. The materials are available digitally and can also be printed. The institute also offers preparation courses in person and online, covering all parts of the exam and helping candidates develop effective exam strategies.
Options if the exam is failed
Those who do not pass individual parts of the exam do not need to retake it in full – only the parts that were not passed need to be repeated. The exact rules may vary depending on the exam center; it is advisable to check these in advance on the Goethe-Institut website or directly with the exam center.
Certificate after passing
Once the exam is passed, an official Goethe certificate is issued confirming the language level achieved. It can be collected in person at the exam center or downloaded digitally through the personal user account on the Goethe website. Delivery by post or email is generally not available.
