Passing a German language exam is a requirement in many situations – for a visa application, a professional recognition application, university admission, or entering the German job market. The following tips help make preparation targeted and effective.

Building a solid language foundation

Before diving into exam preparation, it is worth checking whether grammar, vocabulary, and all four skills – reading, writing, listening, and speaking – are already secure at the target level. Starting practice exams too early, before the fundamentals are in place, quickly leads to frustration and can result in focusing on the wrong areas.

Starting early and setting a realistic schedule

Good preparation takes time. A rough guideline is one to two months, depending on the time available and the target level. A structured schedule that covers all skill areas helps build up the material step by step. Short, regular study sessions are often more effective than occasional long ones.

Getting to know the exam format and practicing deliberately

Each exam provider has its own format, with different task types, time limits, and assessment criteria. Knowing these in advance allows for better strategic planning and targeted work on weaker areas. The official preparation materials from each provider offer a good starting point:

  • Goethe-Institut: Free practice tests and learning materials for all levels from A1 to C2 on the official website.
  • Ă–SD: At B1 level, the Goethe-Institut and Ă–SD share the same exam design – preparation materials from either provider are therefore suitable for both exams. The Ă–SD website also offers free digital practice tests as well as workbooks available for purchase.
  • telc: The "Mit Erfolg zu telc" book series is particularly well suited for levels A1 to B2. Many telc exam centers also offer their own preparation courses.
  • TestDaF: The TestDaF Institute website provides online courses and the "Mit Erfolg zum TestDaF" book series for levels B2 and C1.

Taking practice exams before registering

Once registered and the exam fee paid, withdrawing free of charge is no longer possible in most cases. It is therefore a good idea to work through two or three practice exams before signing up. This gives a realistic picture of whether the current level is already sufficient or whether more preparation time is needed.

Using the language actively in everyday life

Exam materials alone are often not enough. Those who actively use the language outside of studying – by reading German articles, listening to podcasts, or having conversations with native speakers – consolidate what they have learned more effectively and develop a better feel for natural language use. This is particularly helpful for the speaking and writing sections of the exam.

Seeking support when needed

Those who repeatedly hit the same wall during practice or notice little progress should not keep pushing through alone for too long. Preparation courses, study groups, or feedback from teachers can help address weaknesses in a targeted way and speed up the learning process.

Starting the exam day well prepared

Preparation does not end the night before the exam. Getting enough sleep, arriving at the exam venue on time, and bringing all required documents – typically a valid ID and the admission letter – matter just as much as studying the content. Those who know what to expect on the day and feel well rested go into the exam with greater focus and confidence.
