Anyone looking to provide official proof of German language skills, whether for university, a job application, or a residence permit, faces the question of which exam is the right one. This article gives an overview of the most important German language exams and helps identify the best choice. Detailed information on each exam can be found in the individual articles in this section.

Checking purpose and language level

A language certificate is needed in a variety of situations: when applying for a visa, when submitting a recognition application, for university admission, job applications, or when applying for a residence permit, a settlement permit, or naturalization. Depending on the purpose, different language levels are required, aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The specific requirements are not set by the exam providers but by universities, employers, or authorities – so it is worth checking in advance which certificate and which level are recognized in the relevant context. Those planning to live and work in Germany long-term should also think beyond the immediately required level and aim for a level that makes everyday life, work, and social participation easier.

Choosing the right exam provider

There are several recognized providers in the German-speaking world. For international professionals, these four are the most relevant:

  • Goethe-Institut German language exam: Covers all levels from A1 to C2, is available worldwide, and focuses on practical, real-life language use.
  • Österreichisches Sprachdiplom Deutsch (ÖSD): Also covers A1 to C2, is internationally recognized, and available at licensed exam centers worldwide.
  • telc-German language exam: Certificates from A1 to C2, widely used for university admission, employment, naturalization, or residence – with a focus on authentic everyday communication.
  • TestDaF: Developed specifically for university admission and recognized by all German universities as proof of language proficiency.

All four providers are aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), test all four skills – reading, listening, writing, and speaking – and issue an internationally recognized certificate upon passing.

Registering and preparing early

Each exam has its own content, format, and assessment criteria. Targeted preparation is therefore always worthwhile. Registration deadlines, exam locations, and fees should be checked well in advance. Preparation materials and resources for each provider are summarized in the corresponding articles in this section.
