Train with authentic listening sources and gain communication confidence through active speaking practice with language partners.

Listening and speaking form the foundation of all communication: those who can follow conversations in German and express themselves clearly quickly gain confidence at work, in social settings, and at official appointments. The two skills go hand in hand: regular listening develops a feel for pronunciation, intonation, and typical expressions, all of which directly benefit speaking. This article offers practical tips for training listening and speaking in a targeted way.
Listening comprehension
Listening comprehension requires processing spoken language in real time: sounds, stress patterns, and word meanings all need to be taken in simultaneously to understand what is being said. Regular listening reinforces grammatical structures and vocabulary, strengthening the feel for the language over time.
Building up gradually and repeating
A gradual approach works well for listening comprehension too. Short audio texts with clear pronunciation and a slower speaking pace are ideal for getting started. As confidence grows, the level of difficulty can be increased step by step. It also pays to listen to the same audio more than once: the first listen focuses on overall comprehension, while subsequent listens allow for a closer look at details, key words, and main ideas.
Using audiobooks, podcasts, and radio
Audiobooks and podcasts are among the most popular listening resources for German learners. They are available through apps and online platforms, some free of charge and others through paid subscriptions. The learning effect is greatest when the level of the material matches or is close to one's own. Easy German is a well-known podcast for learners, with hundreds of episodes on a wide range of topics. For audiobooks, Audible offers an extensive selection of German-language titles. German radio is also a great resource: it provides authentic insight into the German language and culture and is particularly well suited to those already living in Germany or planning to move there.
Television and music
German television offers a wide range of freely available channels where authentic content can be followed while training listening comprehension at the same time. Visuals and storylines help make spoken language easier to understand. German-language music also supports listening comprehension, expands vocabulary, and can boost motivation along the way.
Using YouTube channels
German YouTube channels offer a wide variety of ways to train listening comprehension. Particularly useful are channels that specialize in teaching the German language and present content in a structured way, tailored to different language levels. The combination of visuals, spoken language, and available subtitles makes content easier to follow while supporting vocabulary development at the same time.
Speaking
Speaking requires the active and spontaneous use of the language – vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation all need to come together at once to express thoughts clearly. Many learners feel uncertain at first or worry about making mistakes. Regular practice is what builds confidence and ease over time.
Using German actively in everyday life
Even short everyday conversations while shopping, at work, or with neighbors help build a routine. The sentences do not need to be perfect; what matters is using the language actively on a regular basis. Confidence grows with every interaction in German.
Speaking out loud and repeating
Reading texts aloud, summarizing something in a few spoken sentences, or putting one's own thoughts into German – all of this helps get used to the sound of the language. Listening to German conversations, videos, or podcasts and repeating key sentences out loud is also worthwhile. This is how natural stress patterns and typical expressions become familiar.
Practicing with a language tandem partner
Regular exchange with other learners or native speakers not only improves pronunciation and feel for the language but also offers the chance to make new connections. For tandem learning to work well, it helps to agree on a few things upfront: how often to meet, how long the conversations will be, and whether the exchange will take place in person or online. When connecting through online platforms, personal details such as home addresses or banking information should not be shared, and trust should be built gradually.
Tandem partners can be found through the Community Portal of the Freiburger Bund. The following platforms also support language exchange:
- My Language Exchange: Around three million registered users worldwide looking to learn or teach languages.
- Speaky: A free platform where other users can be contacted directly, with a convenient app for mobile devices.
- Polyglot Club: Offers tandem contacts as well as online conferences and free courses on language and culture.
- InterPals: Users create a personal profile and search for language partners, similar to a digital pen pal experience.
- Artificial intelligence (e.g. ChatGPT): Those who cannot find a tandem partner or prefer to practice anonymously can use AI to simulate dialogues and practice scenarios, putting the language to active use.
