One of the most important reasons for international healthcare professionals to go abroad is the desire for fair and appropriate remuneration. In this article, we therefore take a look at salaries in the German healthcare sector. Salaries are generally influenced by several factors, in particular the chosen specialty and the location of the workplace. In principle, salaries for healthcare professionals are determined by collective agreements between medical, dental and pharmacy associations, healthcare institutions and the government. The rates are regularly adjusted in line with economic and social developments.

A specialized healthcare professional, such as a medical specialist, generally receives a higher salary than a non-specialized professional. The amount of previous professional experience also plays an important role in salary increases. Salaries also vary depending on the federal state, with higher salaries being paid in large cities than in rural areas. The type of job also influences income: Professionals working in university hospitals earn more than those working in public hospitals or outpatient clinics.

Doctors, dentists and pharmacists who have their own practice or pharmacy generally receive a higher income than people who are employed in hospitals, clinics or other healthcare facilities.

Average salary of doctors

On average, the annual salary of a doctor in Germany is around 93,793 euros. The monthly salary for a junior doctor varies between 4,500 and 5,500 euros, for a specialist between 6,700 and 8,400 euros and for a senior doctor between 8,400 and 12,000 euros.

Average salary of pharmacists

For pharmacists, the monthly salary as a pharmacy manager is between 5,800 and 6,800 euros, while a specialist pharmacist earns between 4,100 and 5,800 euros. An assistant pharmacist receives a salary of at least 2,500 to 3,500 euros per month.

Average salary of dentists

Specialist dentists receive a salary of between 5,300 and 6,800 euros, depending on their specialty, while assistant dentists can receive a salary of between 3,800 and 5,000 euros.

It should be noted that the above salaries represent the gross salary, meaning the total monthly income before deduction of taxes and various fees.

In addition, the starting salary for a healthcare professional with a temporary work permit may be lower than the usual starting salary.

It is also important to note that healthcare professionals in Germany enjoy many additional benefits on top of their salary. These include, for example, paid vacation (30 days annually), health insurance that covers employees and their families, pension insurance and financial compensation for additional shifts. Professionals can also earn additional income through more on-call duties or telemedicine consultation services.
